"permission denied"?

Hi,
I tried the converter.php to import boards from my YabbGold folder. Everything went fine, until I got the following error; immediately after having filled in the mysql hostname etc page, and hitting "Proceed":

Warning: file("/home/dir/to/mysite/cgi-bin/yabb/Variables/agreement.txt") - Permission denied in /home/dir/to/mysite/discuss/converter.php on line 244
I get the same warning for every file inside the Variables directory. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

So every file within the yabb folder needs to be chmod 666? Or just the files within the "Variables" subfolder?
And how do I chmod the (sub)directories themselves (yabb, Variables, ...)? Chmod 777 or 755?
Thanks for your help...

If you're converting and going to kill the old forum, just chmod everything to 777 and run the converter.

Chmodded everything within the YaBBGold directory to 777; ran the converter; still get the exact same error-messages...  :-\
Any other suggestions? Does the converter.php have to be inside a particular folder (the YabbGold, or the YabbSE)? I placed it one level higher than both directories.
The site is hosted by dreamhost.com btw, if that's of any relevance...

When I get this problem, I find that it's often due to directory restrictions.

Try copying your y1g data into a subfolder of your yabbse dierctory and converting out of there.

For example if you're installing into /home/dir/to/mysite/yabbse/  create a directory /home/dir/to/mysite/yabbse/YaBB/ and put your YaBB 1 Gold data into there and do the conversion.

The reason this may work instead is because often you aren't allowed to edit files that are in a different root directory.
