I have Mod_GZIP installed with Apache and it did speed up YaBB considerably. The Compression option in PHP does basically the same, so don't worry.

Just an important remark: Many ISP/ASP servers does have GZIP enabled by default, so there is no gain in enabling output compression in PHP.
But self installed Linux servers by default have GZIP Compression in Apache turned off (SuSE Linux, Red Hat). If People only want to accelerate PHP, then they should use PHP Output compression, if they want everything compressed, they should switch on MOD_GZIP.

People behind Firewalls / Proxies will not benefit from OUTPUT compression, because the Firewall / Proxies will negotiate NO COMPRESSION between the Webserver and itself in order to be able to scan the contents for virus/active X/Porn.

The compression is negotiated normally directly between the browser and the Server. The clients Compression possibilities or offered to the server which selects the best one.

I did some test with a SNIFFER and on HTML you win about 80% of the volume. On images (JPG, GIF) 0%.
