HTML 4.01 compliant?

My heart leapt when I saw this on your home page! A message board/forum that produces valid HTML? When I've been looking everywhere for one (which would pretty well have become my automatic first choice if it existed)...

But these pages are currently a long way short of validating and I'm amazed you've included the 'Valid HTML' links!

Any comments? It matters to me.

QuoteIt matters to me.

(At least it might have done if it didn't need MySQL to run it!)

The default template is 4.01 Valid...

Its this Current site design that isnt valid. If you try an install for yourself you'll find that each page is completely valid.

Things are being worked on.

Yes, we added all of the surrounding HTML but the default HTML template that comes with YaBB was/is compliant.

Thanks for the straight answers, guys!

So where do I go from here? I was planning to upgrade my webhosting a level to get a CGI bin and the usual scripting languages, but can't justify the expense of upgrading another level to MySQL to run a message board for a small (mostly hobby) site like mine. I believe the web would be a better place through universal adherence to standards (even if I'll admit to currently breaking my own rule to harness the power of the Sibelius Scorch plug-in for my music pages),  so I'd obviously prefer a message board that can be configured to produce valid HTML. And I certainly wish you luck with this one if you're making the effort! :)

QuoteSo you don't have mySQL/PHP?

Unfortunately not! I can add a CGI bin, PGP, PHP, SSI, Perl and Java + some extra webspace and bandwidth to my basic package for an extra £4 per month (which I'm prepared to do), but MySQL would be another £5 on top of that (which I simply can't justify for the limited traffic my board gets and no other use for it at the moment). Or I could look for another host, but don't suppose I'll find anything much cheaper...

I think you can get proper hosting for $10-$15 per month (and assuming 4+5 pound =~ $15 plus the price you already pay). You might want to check out some hosting guides (hostspot and others).

Thanks for that, Zef! I've been looking into it and come to some conclusions:

  • I like this board!
  • PHP/MySQL looks like a sound way to go, even if my current needs are pretty modest.
  • I should be able to get what I need (£ or $) for what I'm paying now.
  • Shopping around is easy (I've bookmarked a whole stack of sites), but making the right decision is not when personal experience and reputable reviews count for so much more than sales pitches.
  • So I have to search these (and other) forums for any useful pointers I can get.
And one more thing: can anyone point me in the direction of a YaBB SE board using the default (HTML 4.01 compliant) template so I can take a look at it?

Cheers
