Can't see subject titles

Problem Description:
Two of the message boards I regularly log on to are YaBBSE.

Everything has been fine until last week when I found I could no longer see the subject titles, which in turn means I can't read any messages.

I'm not aware of having changed anything and this board is fine. I've checked with a couple of other users and they are having no problems at all

(I'm afraid I don't know the YaBBSE versions)

problem seems to be Norton Internet Security 2004 as everything works fine when it is disabled.

On this board I can continue to see the topic titles fine when NIS is running but the reply/solve etc buttons disappear so the efffecti of NIS appears to vary depending on the versions being run.

I have emailed Norton for help

Strange.  Sorry we couldn't help - this is interesting indeed.

I'd like to know what Norton says on this issue.... if you get a response, I'd be very thankful if you'd post it here or relay it to me.

just to update you

The problem lies with the ad blocker in Norton's Internet Security 2004.

the problem appears to affect all YaBBSE sites because part of the address being returned as messages are retrieved is interpreted by Norton as a pop-up ad. As an example the address showing for this page is

http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?board=140;action=post;threadid=26030;title=Post%2Breply;start=0

Norton blocks as a default "adid=" as being an advert and thus appears to block "threadid=26030" when it loads the page. Whatever this refers to is therefore suppressed.

Within Norton NIS it is possible to override the default for any page. With their advice I have found it fairly easy to apply.  

Should anyone else report the problem the link below explains how to override the default ad blocker settings.

One thing I did find when trawling for info is that not all YaBBSE sites are affected the same way.

The two I usually use lost their topic headers whereas this site (yabbse.org) appeared to be working fine until I went to post a reply and realised the reply/solve/etc buttons were missing.

I take it this is down to different versions of YaBBSE being run.

Obviously NIS 2004 is just out so I'll be one of the first to encounter these problems so it might be worth adding "are you running NIS 2004?" to the troubleshooting FAQs

BTW Symantec response: "please accept our apologies for the difficulty caused.

These message board sites need to be configured individually. Symantec is investigating this problem. The cause is unknown, and there is no solution at this time. This document will be updated when new information becomes available or a solution is found."
