ok thanks, 3 quick ones off the top of my head

1) will it have collapsable categories like the forum here

2) how different is the template design from yabb  (does it still use something like [yabb main] ? )

3) whats the difference between a theme and a template

more cant be answered until i know the dbase structure.. because going to need to write an entrance page for my forum with some live stats like users online etc etc.. shouldnt be a problem though

It does have collapsable cateogries that have new post indicators if closed.  An admin can also choose, when adding a new category, whether to allow users to collapse it or not.  Useful so people can't close your news category or soemthing.

Currently I believe it uses close to the same template.  The difference is there are 20 or 30 different templates allowing you to mdoify looks of different parts of your forum.  A theme is then a set of templates, CSS, images, and language files.  There will still be a simple theme/template editor as we understand not everyone wants to deal with complex templates even though that will be an option.

As I like to say, the current code is in alpha state in terms of features we still want to add but I woudl call it beta or even stable in terms of, well, how stable it it.  We have been running it live on two dev sites for a month or so and eliminated all bugs we could find.

thanks. well i'm not in an hurry for the release.. since I want to have my other work based around it done by then... lol.. but a beta to fiddle with a get used to for a while beforehand will be cool once i can sign up:)

btw.. something that always puzzled me about why this site didnt have it. but might i suggest the site for the new forum have a proper break down of features for prospective users to browse over.. maybe even a comparison against other software too? (depending how good it makes it look.. lol)

the only vague ideas given there are...

Quote<@David> We are hoping to unveil the new site later this month to allow you to see it grow and change

Quote<@Jeff_Lewis> Beta testing: beta testing will be first offered to our charter members
<@Jeff_Lewis> Site/Name: We are working hard on the site now and it's pretty far along. We will announce the site/name fairly soon. I'm hoping end of month.

so hopefully in the next week or two there will be a bigger announcement with more details etc. (someone said a mass mail will be sent)
and beta versions for those who sign up as charter members (which is what i'm chompin at the bit for)... those who dont sign up will have to wait.

Unknown can answer that better but I don't think it is fully coded yet.  From the ideas I was hearing a while ago a new member will be "Pending" group and using permissions not let them do anything.

ok sounds interesting.

just wondering about when the user gets their pass.. because if they're to be be rejected then that mod gives the option of no email, or a rejection message :)

this is kinda why i was apprenhensive about asking questions now.. some of these will be obvious once we have it :)

Well, you can turn on and off registration... which is the most useful part.  You can also create Pending, Banned, or Jail groups and slop people in there for different reasons...

But, no.. the only thing it really has is turn on/off registration.  At least, as yet.  And, I'm sure Spaceman-Spiff would be more than willing to rewrite his mod/have it included later.

Just a note... becoming a charter member does cost a little money, but it's only to support our hosting costs... and, it's well worth it, I might say ;).

Will mods still be written and applied in the same way? Will YaBBPaks (or whatever they'll be known as) be the "preferred" method of modding?

yeah i'm pretty sure i'm going to sign up for that.. and you did say 'little money' hehe

so when activated how does the registration differ from that mod i mentioned?

in my own situation when 'authorising' i really need to be able to profile the pending applications based specifically around their email addresses + ips. (i was hoping to contribute to that mod with a mod that resolves the ip -> hostname)
