is it possible to have some kind of alert when someone sends you an IM?

I am using PfaBB/Yabbse in a kind of virtual network, where close contact among the members is important. From this point of view it would be very effective when seeing that someone is online, to be able to quickly establish a conversation. The shoutbox is not private enough, so I think IM would be best. (if someone here thinks a private 'chat' is a simple modification of shoutbox... great!!)
