Notify Plus for Se?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it - is there an existing (or planned) port of Notify Plus (or the equivalent) for SE?

YABB SE is phenomenal, with one major weakness - the notification options. May of my users will whine and snivel ( :'( ) if they don't have more control over notification (e.g., the ability to specify an email notification for any posting, to any board - much list a listserv works).

Thanks!

I am very close to having it done - just need to sort out the various mail formats - need the HTML wrapper and a method to attach - scrounging for them now.

Great! That is really good news. I'm actually surprised that this wasn't part of the 'standard feature set' for SE, since it is available for Gold.

Will you announce its availability here, or is there somewhere else I should 'watch'?

This is a fairly radical change to Notify.php - I will probably start here and then move it to mods. This thing touches a number of modules and I don't use boardmod so I have to come up with a way to integrate it.

I'm not sure what the Notify Plus mod does as I'm not real familiar with YaBB Gold (SE is so much nicer!), but there is an advanced notification mod available that will allow you to subscribe to entire boards and receive emails everytime someone started a new thread in that board...

Hi.  I'm looking for this, what version of SE?  What is the name of the mod?

Thanks.

YABB SE (and equivalent sorts of things, like phpBB), are essentially 'active' - the user has to take the effort to fire up their web browser, then look at the board to see who has posted what. At the other extreme is the listserv, which sends copies of everything, to everyone (and thus is completely 'passive').

What I (and 95% of my users) really want is a hybrid: a BBS that give the user the option of email notification of anything that is posted to any baord. In a perfect system, any time someone posted to the board, the user could choose to receive a copy of the post via email, and then be able to reply to the post, directly to the board, without having to fire up their web browser. I run a HyperNews discussion that does this quite nicely (but it has other real limitations). Since the 2-way email gateway is a technical challenge, I'm looking for somethig intermediate: a least the otpion of getting an email notification, or copy of the post, for any post to any board, if the user so chooses.

I guess a lot of us are looking to woo our users away from Yahoo! groups and other systems, and it's an easier sell if we can emulate the email option.

Several of our existing group on Yapoops! are getting the daily digest. Any plans for a digest?

Actually, for grins, I've been comparing YaBB SE with phpBB (see www.phpbb.com). These two apps are remarkably similar (I suspect there are similarities at the code-base level).

Pro of phpBB: has a mod which allows most of the notification controls you'd want (like email notification for any posts).

Con of phpBB: a really annoying ip-based authorization/security system, which causes no end of hassles for a lot of users (especially if your isp uses DHCP).

Pro and cons of YaBB SE are opposite of the above.

Actually... the code is more different than you might think.

Anyhow, board level notifications are easy... but, an auto-responder is not-as-easy.

You'd have to somehow set something up where you'd have an account just for YaBB SE.  YaBB SE would then have to periodically check that account for new messages, and "post" them.  It'd have to find some way of ID'ing the emails, and would bomb if you removed that ID...

This would be quite annoying to write.

Why not something as simple as what HyperNews does: when a user register s/he is aksed i they want to receive email notification for EVERY post. If they say 'yes', then their userid (and email address) gets dumped into a file called 'immediate'. Then, whenever anything is posted on the board, the equivalent of 'notify.php' simply runs through said 'immediate' list, and sends an email to everyone in the list.

Works like a charm, and strikes me a something fairly easy to implement - in perl at least (I know squat about php at present).

Just to follow-up - when you differentiate between 'board-level notifications' and 'auto-responders', what do you mean, precisely?

As several of us have noted, all we want is the capacity for any registrant to say 'hey, whenever ANYTHING is posted, regardless of which board, send me an email'.  Most of us, and most of our users, absolutely do not want to have to fire up the browser and access the BBS to see who has posted what.  That's analogous to having to walk to the end of the laneway to see if there is something in the mailbox. Much better is a system whereby I can look out my window, and see if there is mail, before making the trip.

I thought you wanted to be able to repsond to the email, and have it posted.  That's hard.

Board-level notifications - or even forum-wide notifications are easy.  Look in Post.php, at the end of Post2().
