New install, parse error in english.lng

I've just installed YaBBSE for the first time on my site.  The installer wouldn't work, so I had to use the safe mode install.  Both versions gave errors after step 1:

The same basic warnings repeat for 8 more images.

Despite those warnings, the rest of the safe mode install seemed to work, but when I go to the index page for my board, this error message appears at the top, and there's no navigation, no login, just spaces where that info should be.

I didn't modify any of the files before uploading.  I set permissions as specified in the instructions.  I checked the english.lng file and can't see anything wrong.  My host is running PHP 4.3.1 and MySQL 4.0.12

How do I fix this?

Make sure you chmod'd everything writable.  Try uploading a clean english.lng from the safe mode package.

I guess third time's a charm.  I checked permissions again, then uploaded english.lng again, and it all seems to be working now.  Thanks.
