If you need a mod for the avatar gallery, count me in ;)
Or a mod anywhere else too.

But the restriction of size in kB of the avatars is a good thing. Why make avatars bigger than 20kB ?
My avatar is 3kB.

Mine are all above 20k (well most of them), why? Because it's an animation ;D

It was fun to have it. An idea for bandwith reduction: what if one would limit the avatar size say to 20 KB (or a lower value maybe 10 KB). How much bandwith would that spare? Bigger avatars make anyway no sense... And delete all avatars from the gallery with are bigger than this limit.

I think the limitation is good...  but if you think that isn't...

another thing: I have seen a lot of time the same avatar, posted by 2 or 3 different people.  it could be a good idea to delete doubles...

I agree there was many duplicate images in the gallery... and there were quite a few that overlapped eachother and some just too damn big... :P

**sighs** And just when I was going to upload a whole bunch of avatars that could be used.  Guess I'll have to wait until other arrangements are made. :)

One thing that I've noticed is people submitting avatars that are identical to others, EXCEPT for one MINOR thing changed. Something like the color of the background, or the color of the character, and whatnot. If people want to submit an animated .gif, they should make the background transparant, so that the image will work on any color background, and still look nice. If you did that, it would stop most of the changes to the backgrounds. As for the minor changes to the image itself, such as making Spiderman Green, I dunno. *shrug*

I had previously counted about 50 avatars total, in which they were identical, except for something minor, as the background.

Also, as a suggestion, maybe the categories for the Avatar Gallery could be more precise? I've gone through the 'Anime' gallery hundreds of times, looking for Final Fantasy avatars, and I have to go through each and every page looking for them. I go through about 100 different avatars before I find the Final Fantasy ones. Lots of wasted bandwidth there.

Sadly, this probably wouldn't work because it's simply not possible to anti-alias most images to 'work' on any background.

I find the 65x65 pix avatars big enough, so maybe you can resize, not remove, the bigger ones...

in Mac, GraphicConverter can do it easily and fast with great compression, I don't know in PC a program like that yet (if anyone does, let me know  ;))

If it currently on a Unix box with Image Magick, then simply do :
mogrify -resize 65x65 *.gif
It will even keep aspect ratio!

.. and people keep telling me Unix is hard  ::)

Jasc Paint Shop Pro, Ulead PhotoImpact, possibly Adobe Photoshop (don't have the program yet, but I couldn't image it NOT having that ability).

And you could set the background on the animated gifs to being transparent.  That's easy too, although it can be just a bit tedious (having to go frame by frame on the animation, depending on the gif).

Just my 2 cents:

Would it be better if users had to have their avatars moderated and better if we had more categories? That way it would be easier to validate the incoming avatars.
