HOW TO CONVERT YaBB Gold SP 1.1 to YaBB 1.4.1

I found that instruction for the conversion of YaBB to YaBBSE is hard to locate and littered everywhere. So here is my attempt to sum it all up for the benefit of others:

Step 1: Download YaBBSE from http://www.yabbse.org/download.php

You should be downloading either the normal or Safe version, not the Upgrade Version.

Step 2: Unzip the installation zip file. There should be 3 files: (1) readme.html (2) install.php (3) yse141.ya

Step 3: Read the readme.html. Note that you are not upgrading but installing fresh.

Step 4: Connect to your server via FTP or other means. Create a directory to which you want to set up your YaBBSE (e.g. \yabbse)

*** VERY IMPORTANT: CHMOD the directory you have just created to 777

Step 5: Upload install.php (in ASCII mode) and yse141.ya (in BINARY mode) to that directory

Step 6: Open your browser and run install.php (e.g. http://www.yourserver.com/yabbse/install.php)

--- You need to have access to mysql on your server. You need mysql username (usually: localhost) and password. If you don't, ask your webhost or administrator. ---

Step 7: Follow the instructions on the screen and fill in the necessary information.

Step 8: Once you have created your new YaBBSE, delete install.php and yse141.ya AND chmod your directory to 755

--- Congratulate yourself and give yourself a pat on your back. You have now created a fresh YaBBSE. But don't open the champagne just yet... ---

Step 9: Download YaBB 1 Gold Converter from http://www.yabbse.org/download.php or http://www.yabbse.org/download.php?download=converter.zip

Step 10: Unzip the file

Step 11: Upload converter.php to the directory you have created in Step 4.

Step 12: Open your browser and run converter.php (e.g. http://www.yourserver.com/yabbse/converter.php)

Step 13: Follow the instructions on the screen and fill in the necessary information. When asked, tick/check "purge database".

Step 14: If all goes well, all past messages, members etc. will be merged into your new YaBBSE.

--- Pop that champagne! ---

If I miss out anything, please fill free to add to this thread.

PS: By the way, the Converter does not bring over attachments. gandolphxx is working on Converter Plus which does. Check out http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?board=132;action=display;threadid=15152

major thing wrong with the conversion is that you can not search concerted posts.

One question, when you convert from an old version, do you keep all of your MODs, etc... (I don't have the attachments MOD so I'm not worried about those, anyway.)

Hi and thanks for the info but will this work with sp1  :-\

and if it fails to work will the sp1 board still have all the topics etc on it

IE two boards running when it does work sp1 and SE at the same time both with all the topics and boards.

So I can test the new SE without looseing my old forum (sp1) and topics in the process

hope that makes sense  :-\

Yes it works with SP1. Also, the converter doesn't touch the old files so you can run both boards at the same time and test the new one out.

great, I will try the converter now. But the converter won't delete my old board files? because even if the board is converted successful I have to write some custom code first. So till that time my old yabb board has to run.

HELP! no matter what I do - copy the old board files in to the same directory etc. The converter always says it cannot find the old board files! It doesn't recognize the board files at all and I've worked on this for hours. Anyone have a solution to this?

probably becuase you didn't write the name right (capital letters)

I think in the converter it sets it by default to ../cgi-bin/YaBB
but it should be ../cgi-bin/yabb

something like that, try it out.
