I'd like to see a script like this that truncates to show you the article title as a link, the author name and date, then the first few lines of the post with a trailing "....", kind of like the ones they use on Community Zero, for their index boards.  That way, you could see more of the most recent articles in a smaller space.

that is pretty easy to do, if i had time i would write it up only a few lines of codes, maybe later i will code it. Unless someone esle has the time and want to write it real fast.

open News.php, search for:
   $news_body = DoUBBC($row['body']);
replace with:
   $news_body = substr($row['body'],0,100)."...";
   $news_body = DoUBBC($news_body);
change 100 with number of characters u want to display
u might need to change some text too in the links

Wht if, instead of a board, I would like to use a thread as News. Something like this:

When i use the shtml version.. it brings back random characters... does the same thing when I try to see the shtml example in the first post

You're doubling compressing the output.  Either turn off output compression, don't use it in your script.... or something.
