Quote from: Jaxom on January 22, 2002, 09:46:40 PM1) Will it allow you to select to show as news by a board, a category or all categories (i know the last one is a function of ssi.php, but i like to have more control over the 'look' of my headlines). Or can you only show the topics in a particular board?

It works the same as the original news mod in the sence of board only, but it is something you can control from the URL.  I wouldn't know why people would want to have a category or all categories all showing as part of the news.  But I wanted to keep this simple.  Some people just want to show news and thats it, and don't want to be complex about it.  If others feel the need, someone will hack my script, just like people did for [CV]XXL's one for YaBB 1 Gold.

Quote from: Jaxom on January 22, 2002, 09:46:40 PM2) Can you select to only show the oldest (i.e. topic starter msgs) newest (latest reply) or all msgs in all topics by date?

This should work the exact same as YaBB SE does it.  Newest to Oldest.

Quote from: Tino on January 22, 2002, 10:13:53 PMhi jaxom,

think I should remove my version from my server, cause you are working on a newer version. dave is still working and I think two news-scripts (and yours was the first  ;) ) are enough.
How do you find the the changes I made? I agree with you, I made only small changes but I didn't like to give a second version of latest_topics to the community,so I've changed the name.

tino

I must admit I haven't had the time to look at in depth, but the changes (using proper variable names in the template, separating out the language components from the source, allowing headers and footers) were all bits i thought about adding - and the ability to show attatchments was something that didn't even occur to me. So on that front, you've definitely improved on my original mod, while retaining it's flexibility.

So as far as I'm concerned, you should keep up your addon, as it's a better one than mine as it stands, even if it's still a little rough in places, its a lot less rough than my one! If you want to call it latest_topics version 1.1, that's fine by me too (you can avoid a conflict with news.php then). I'll also stick a link up to your version from my site if you like.

The newer version i'm writing is more than a tinkering though, it's effectively a rewrite from the ground up, to give the same power, with extra options, and a lot easier to use. It's still in a somewhat disjointed stage at the moment, but once i've got fully working code, i'd quite like your input, if you're interested. I'd also love to palm off writing the multilingual version, as i only speak english (well, it's the only language i speak fluently enough to write instructions in) so if you're interested in porting my newest version into german, i'd be more than happy :)

ARGGGGGGG! After spending half an hour explaining the difference between what  latest_topics does, and what news.php sounds like it's going to do, i lose the whole lot when i tried to post it due to a dropped line. [beats head on table]

Rather than type it all out again, all i'm going to say is this:
if you want to see *why* I need more flexibility in latest_topics than [CV]XXL's original news mod, then look at http://www.theguildhouse.net/jokes and http://www.theguildhouse.net

I've got three 'latest_topics' addons running, for slurping different types of content out of http://www.theguildhouse.net/forum. (If you include the examples i've got running on www.theguildhouse.net/latest_topics , i've actually got 12 latest_topics scripts running off one forum, all with different templates and options)

Anyway. I'll carry on developing latest_topics for the minority of oddballs like me who need more than a simple 'new topics in 1 board with comments' , while news.php will be much more suitable for most people who just want a news section on their front page aka boardmod.

Godai, I agree with you.
But I think, an advanced newsmod should be also on the list of mods, for those people like me oder jaxom.
If alan (or the others in the yabbse-team) doesn't like to "blow up" the news.php, which will be integrated in the next release, with so much (most unused) features, there could be a second version called newsmod_plus like in y1g.
showing attached images is a "must have" for me on our motorsport-page, cause some people of our club are collecting images from the newest cars but they aren't firm with html etc. :(
So they post the mail into the board and attach the image and it will be on the startpage...
But I think, it would also be boring, if everybody has the same opinion.  ;)

I plan on integrating some new features into News.php after YaBB SE 1.3.0 is released.

These new features will be controlled however and can be enabled and disabled, but disabled by default.

might be stupid but I will ask anyway.  Does this need to be on the same comp as yabb?  would it be possible to host yabb at one url and then show the news.php/ssi.php (wondering bout ssi.php too) at another place???

This is a good idea, groundup, and depends on the include function in php.  If it lets you specify an exact url then yes it would work.

Groundup, here is your answer.
QuoteIf "URL fopen wrappers" are enabled in PHP (which they are in the default configuration), you can specify the file to be included using an URL (via HTTP) instead of a local pathname. If the target server interprets the target file as PHP code, variables may be passed to the included file using an URL request string as used with HTTP GET. This is not strictly speaking the same thing as including the file and having it inherit the parent file's variable scope; the script is actually being run on the remote server and the result is then being included into the local script.
