Rules and Regs

Well, they aren't really rules and regs, but we have a few requests to you mod writers out there.
  • For now, untill we release a couple IMPORTANT mods...leave Admin.php and the package php files alone.  Don't worry - you can play with them in a couple weeks
  • leave Settings.php alone please.  We would like you to store all your variables in the settings table (which has 2 fields - variable and value).  You can access those variables with the yabb-defined global variable $modSettings['yourVariableName'] = 'yourVariableValue';
We ask this so as to keep Settings.php pristine, and to make sure the installer /converter won't have any problems.
  • please leave the "Modify Forum Preferences and Settings" screen along.  We made an "Installed 'Mods' Settings and Options" screen just for you!
  • please try to keep your mod code together - i.e. try not to spread it out.  the reason for this is to allow us to easily implement updates to the scripts as we create new releases.  Code that alters every other line is MUCH worse than code that adds 200 lines a the top.
  • please user VERY descriptive varaible names so as not to create conflicts with other mods or other code - i.e. all the attachment mod stuff has 'attachment' before the variable name
thanks!

What about giving each mod a number, and use that as the prefix of all variables? Or, maybe a unique name, that would be more descriptive.
You could get the unique name via a script on this page, and when you want to submit a mod, you have to enter this name with it to be able to submit it. The script then makes sure no one uses the same variable names.
Just since finding two conflicting mods out of a list of 40 is a bitch, I think it's worth the effort.

uh, this is an off topic question, but does the forum preferences and settings section have its own file, or is it part of admin.php?

Don't know if you knew it was off topic why you'd post it here in a reply...

The forum settings are in Admin.php, the mod settings are in ModSetting.php.

I messed with the Package and Admin files already :)

Actually, they are just bug fixes, for stupid bugs that were made at 2 AM probably :)

I also messed with Post.php too :)

you can "approve" my packages I guess ;)

So.... can we play with the Admin.php now?  I want to mod the email members section which is in the Admin.php.
