announcement board versus 'regular' board

Earlier, I posted an inquiry concerning possiblities for having an option for email notification for every posting to any board (something analogous to what a listserv does). Turns out this would require a fair bit of tweaking.

However, it occured to me that one 'kludge' to get the same result would be to simply call every board an 'announcement' board, since announcement boards have the option of sending email to every user. Individual users could modify their profiles to turn this on, or off.

Seems like a simple solution - but, I wonderd if there is a reason NOT to do this - are there any limits to announcement boards versus the 'regular' kind, that would limit the utility of this approach?

Thanks!

Whoops - forgot. Announcement boards can only be posted to by the moderator(s).

Dang!  ;)
