What are some tweaks and suggestions that i can do to improve the amount of bandwidth that the boards take up? I have about 30 users that post 5-10 messages daily. I am not to worried about the size of the forum as i am about the bandwidth hit it has been causing my server. What tips do you have to improving the usage of the site? The board is at http://www.gotsanity.net/yabbse/ if you want to look at it.

All anyone could really suggest is enabling output compression, but you already have - http://leknor.com/code/gziped.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gotsanity.net%2Fyabbse%2F - so theres not a lot you can do to get it down furthur, shouldnt imagine it would be very high?

nice site, Scotty_B

some other things that you can do to save bandwidth:
- use optimized images (like the ones in default yse 1.5.x packages) & don't use HUGE or unnecessary images
- use external css file
- use external js file (if you have js in your template)

hmm... can't think of anything else right now...

Even better on none gzipped sites as it estimates how much compression and the file sizes will be at the various levels.

Which is nice  ;D

My site www.dpgr.gr is not gziped as I just noticed:
http://leknor.com/code/gziped.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dpgr.gr%2Fforum
(I was not aware of this link)

1) How do I gzip my forum?
2) How much trafffic (percentage) will I earn?
3) Is there any risk or any loss from this action of gzip? Maybe it becomes slower?   ???

Gzipping has these effects:
- it requires more CPU time. (both client and server.)
- it slows/increases load times.
- it decreases bandwidth transfer. (A LOT!)

To turn on gzip, just enable "output compression" in Install 'Mods' Settings and Options.

Actually it is gzipped - http://leknor.com/code/gziped.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dpgr.gr%2Fforum%2F - you need the trailing / or you just get the apache redirect to the proper location ;)

1) How do I gzip my forum?
Its the enabled output compression in installed mods settings and options

2) How much trafffic (percentage) will I earn?
Disable the option, and have a look at the link I posted - the one including the trailing slash and it will give the figures, not sure what level of compression YSE uses.

Server load may marginally increase due having to compress the pages, but the effect will be practically unnoticable, the benefit is a  much smaller download. Think I noticed about a 10x reduction in bandwidth with it enabled, which also means that pages appear quicker for most users.

Actually, depending on the settings in php.ini, you may not need to "enable Compressed Output" in Installed Mods...

If you test my site at http://pfabb.lunabyte.com/index.php?op=forum, you'll see gzip enabled, but "enable Compressed Output" is NOT checked in Installed Mods.
