Avatar gallery back online

The avatar gallery has been reopened. It had been temporarily closed due to the large amount of bandwidth it consumed.

One of the largest YaBB SE communities (40K.CA/EldarOnline.com) has offered to host and moderate the avatar gallery. Because it will be used by both the YaBB SE and the 40k community, the gallery can even grow in a much faster pace. We are very grateful to Purple Raine for hosting the gallery.

The gallery can be accessed by clicking 'Avatar Gallery' in the left bar.

What you should do....is put all the avatars on an ISP webspace account. (some offer as much as 50mb), then link to them on there.
hehe
Least then there would be no worries about bandwith.  ;D

Well over here in England, all the major ISP's give you free webspace, no mention of bandwith at all.
For instance my Cable internet provider has 50mb of diskspace allocated per home user.
They don't seem to care what you put on there as long as it isn't illegal material of course :P
But of course, it's an ISP account for residential users, so it doesn't come with php or mysql or anything.
So i'm not sure if it would work.
But would be a good place to store regularly used images or something :)

The Avatar-Gallery causes something like 40-50 GB traffic per month... i bet that every host that promises "unlimited bandwidth for 9.99$/month" will kick you before the first month is over *g* The Webspace isn't a problem....

I understand that.
What I was saying, was isp's over here in England and i'm sure it applies to America to, don't have restrictions on TRAFFIC....
Meaning I could fill my 50mb of webspace up with say.....a 49mb zip file and have 100 people download it and they wouldn't care.
Worth bearing in mind, i'm talking about isp's not webhosts
So if the actuall STORAGE area doesn't need to have php or mysql installed, then you should consider sticking all the jpegs/gifs on a isp account
It's cheesy..but would save you a fair buck i'm sure :P

QuoteWhat is webspace?
As an ntl customer you are automatically entitled to a whopping 55MB of free webspace. This is your very own chunk of the Internet and you can use this space to build your website.

You could use a mirroring system if the bw becomes too much. Just another idea :)

SF.net could be a mirror.
I am sure you can find some other reliable users with dedicated servers that would do the same.
