Odd problem when Quoting

I am encountering a random problem on my board.

When quoting a post "sometimes" the line breaks (hard returns) show up in the quote box as <br />

There is a space between the br and the /

This is annoying and looks terrible.

Anyone have any suggestions.  It seems to occur more often when tags are ubbc used in the quoted text.
