Help - Win2K New Install - 3 errors

Cheers Folks,

With help from my hosting company, we figured out how to get YabbSE installed on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server, the problem was the file permissions they had set on the directories. Anyway....

The board is functional, but I receive three errors.

[A]  When a user tried to register, the following error is displayed to the user, even though the user is able to register.

2: Server Error
(O:\Hosted Web Sites\Jeffrey.Galford\hovercrew_com\www\yabbse\Sources\Subs.php ln 335)

When I log in as admin and go to "Email Your Members" I receive the following error, which is the same as #1.

2: Server Error
(O:\Hosted Web Sites\Jeffrey.Galford\hovercrew_com\www\yabbse\Sources\Subs.php ln 335)

Note: Yes the hosting provider and I made sure the SMTP address is correct, and entered into the "Forum Preferences and Settings" SMTP-Server.  This has to be something simple to fix....   :D

[C] When I log in as Admin, and click on "Forum Preferences and Settings", at the top of the loaded page with the settings, I recieve the following error:

Failed to make Backup of Settings.php

Have any ideas?
Thanks in Advance,

Jeffrey Galford

have your yabbse folder sufficient permissions? seems to be a permission denieded error! if the settings.php can not backed up as settings.php.bak!

Mediman,

First, thx for the reply.

On a "UNIX" box, I understand the yabbse dir needs to be chmod 777 (owner/group/public = read | write | exe).

Now on this windows 2k box, what permissions should I tell the hosting provider to set for the yabbse dir?  By default, the hosting company has set the perms to read only for the /www/ dir , and "inheriting" the same read perms to child directories & files.  They don't want any write perms set on anything below the /www/ dir, so there "security" won't be compromised, as they tell me.

Any ideas?

Thanks for all the help, we will get this fixed!

you have to set write rights!

yabbse is not below but over the www directory!

i.e. O:\Hosted Web Sites\Jeffrey.Galford\hovercrew_com\www\yabbse\Sources\Subs.php

then hovercrew_com is below but yabbse is over www in the server!

www and all direcrtories over that can be with write permissions!

cheers medi

Medi,

I'm confused now, how can the yabbse directory be "over" or "higher" the \www\ directory?  It can't, \yabbse is a sub directory within the \www\ directory.

O:\Hosted Web Sites\Jeffrey.Galford\hovercrew_com\www\yabbse\Sources\Subs.php

When I FTP into my host, the root access is within the \Jeffrey.Galford\ directory. At this point I only have one directory to enter into > \hovercrew_com\

Now once in > O:\Hosted Web Sites\Jeffrey.Galford\hovercrew_com\   I have two directories to enter into, #1 \databases (permissions set = read & write)  #2 \www which is the web root (permissions set = read)

Now once I goto the \www\ directory I have the \yabbse directory, (permissions set to = read and "allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate this object".  Then we have all the remaining files and directories within the \yabbse directory to complete the software package.

This web host, has set the READ ONLY permission on the \www\ directory and is allowing that read permission to propagate to ALL subdirectories within the \www\ directory.  They say this is for security reasons, because they don't want anyone to write a script to any directory that is viewable from the web, and could possibly hack into their servers....

I understand in a "UNIX" world, just do a chmod = 777 on the \yabbse directory and all would be fixed, but with this hosting company, stating that all subdirectories within the \www\ must be read only, I don't understand how we can have write permissions set on the \yabbse directory, and meet their security requirements.

Or am I just missing something really simple here?  Please help me figure this out.

Thanks,

Jeff Galford

1. child folders sind "over" the parent directory!
2. parent folder are "below" the child folders!

                              child child child
                              parent parent
                                      root

there are no reason to not allow write rights in a child folder like yabbse, but without this, yabbse will not work!

Both problems A and B will be solved when mail is et up properly. PHP needs to have the SMTP server correctly in php.ini look for SMTP in the php.ini file and make sure you are using SMTP and not sendmail. That will solve those two errors.

As for problem C, it just can't overwrite Settings.php. Make sure it has permissions to be overwritten. It's not a huge deal that it won't backup but it's always nice to have a backup when you make changes.
