Meaning you seem to be running a VERY old version of PHP.   Sorry - there's no helping you if you're running PHP version < 4.0.0

CommuniTech.Net is currently offering PHP version 3.0.9 and 4.0.3pl1. PHP 4.0.3pl1 is currently installed as a CGI binary, while PHP 3.0.9 is compiled into Apache. Below are the paths to PHP version 4.0.3pl1:

/usr/bin/php4

For backwards compatibility, PHP 3.0.6 is also available in:
/usr/bin/php
And PHP 3.0.9 is also available in:
/usr/local/php/php3.0.9
