Mysql problems

Problem Description:
The following is the message that comes up on our web page (now that the boards are not working for some reason):

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/tmp/mysql.sock' (11) in /home/gingerbe/public_html/yabbse/index.php on line 50

The server hosts say this:   I checked at the server side and found that there are problems at all. Please do
check and let me know if you need any further assistance.

I checked and found that the db_usern is specified as user
yse153.ya:$db_user = "root";
yse153.ya:$db_user = "root";

This clearly indicates the problem could be with the mysql connection.

We have checked the root and its pointed correctly.  We feel that this is a problem with the server but they wont help us.  meanwhile our forum is down and our users are getting jumpy!  The boards worked perfectly well for the first day and a half and now all of a sudden they are down and the server hosts say its nothing to do with them.  Can someone please advise us?

Ohhhhh please someone give me a helping hand and be my fairy godmother/father for one night.  I really need some help here...  My server hosts aren't helping either and I am stuck at present for answers.  I do believe that the problem is with the server not the way the board was set up as it worked fine for a day and a half.  Pleaseeeeeee someone wave their magic wand for me....  _{I will love you forever....}

Tell them that the connection settings are in Settings.php, not in the .ya file; in fact you can and probably should delete that .ya file.

Can you login via ssh?  Do things like phpMyAdmin work?
