Should I use SE or Perl version?

Hello!

I have administered several perl YaBB boards in the past with great success.  I am switching web hosts and starting a new board.  The web host will support SE as well as Yabb Gold.  I have php and Perl experience so I was thinking about trying a SE board.

How do the two systems compare?  What are the benefits / drawbacks?  Are there fewer mods for SE?  Less support?   Are SE boards faster?  Leaner?

Thanks for answering!  Yes I realize I may get a biased reception here so I may post this over at yabbforum as well.

Hi,

I would use SE.
It's much faster, more secure and has a lot of modifications. and the support is great.  ;)

to get better answer, try converting one of your boards first, and see if you like it or not ;)

I noticed a number of hosts specifically refuse to host YaBB SP. Perl driven forums are seen as too server intensive.

Ugh, I hate when people ask this question, caus epeople get all defensive like I shall here:

The perl board is just as secure as SE to whomever was saying SE was more secure. In fact all boards are just as secure as one another as they are all viable to holes being found.

As to hosts refusing the perl version - that was with previous older version of yab gold, many hosts have lifted that stupid requirement now :).

Now, off the defense, the BEST way to pick your board, is to try out each of them, and see which one you like better.  After all, it's not me who's ognna use your board, and it's nnot any of the amdins or users round here. YOU will be in charge of your board, so if that means picking this baord, the perl version, phpbb, iB, or whatever, it's YOUR choice, and you should be the one to make it. You got the power - use it :D

Can't comment as it's been a year and a half since I was running the YaBB Perl project but from what I hear, significant strides have been made.

Good to hear.

Quite frankly, I like the PHP version because it's faster and the database back end makes things much smoother. For example, search for 100 of my posts here and then search for 100 of Shoebs posts on yabbforum.com

Eventually Perl is going to mySQL as well but for now I always install SE on client sites.
