Major problem with Upgrading to 1.51

Well, after spending hours, I think everything is totally screwed up now.  I backed up the files before trying to upgrade to 1.51 from 1.50.   My first problem was that everything went okay as I followed the exact instructions and only problem I was getting is everytime I log on to do something, it would log me off right away so probably a cookie error.  After a few hours of trying many things that didn't work, I tried to revert back to 1.50 with the backups.  Now the problem is, that doesn't work either.  In fact, when I try to log in with my user, it tells me the password is wrong.  I can't even seem to log into my board anymore  :(  I never really had much luck with codes and even when it's just execute a simple ***.*** file, some reason things never work 100% of the time.  If there is anyone who can help or have suggestions etc.  I've just about given up now and really don't want to close my board down.  :(

EDIT:  Okay, did a little more tinkering and got it back to the state it was before with the cookie problem.  Ie. 1.51.  Any help would be great, I've read most of the other messages in regards to the problem but nothing seem to have worked so far.  Perhaps a list of things that can solve the problem and I will try them all.  Thanks in advance.

Please provide a link, PHP version, any lines in your Settings.php that start with $cookie, and a little patience ;).

Link to the forum is www.prowulf.com/forum

$Cookie_Length = 60;            # Cookies will expire after XX minutes of person logging in (they will be logged out after)
$cookiename = "PCFusernamev14";            # Name of the cookie

Those are the only 2 lines in the Settings.php that has $cookie... I know in 1.50 there was 3 but I guess that has changed.  I talked to the host tech support and apparently the php version across all the shared servers are 4.0.6.  Not sure if this could cause the problem with the cookies because it's not 4.1 but everything else seem to work okay.  I asked if the PHP could be upgraded but because it's a shared thing, they can't.  If there is an easy way to downgrade back to 1.50 I would but for some reason the backups aren't working like they should (even though I paid special attention to the ASC/Binary etc etc.)  Ideally I would like to get this problem with being logged out / cookie problem remedied.  :(

On a note though, when I upgraded from 1.40 to 1.50, everything went perfect.  :)

If you want to go back to 1.5.1, you'll have to have any user (including yourself!) who logged in use the forgot password link.

However, it should be noted that 1.5.0 also requires PHP 4.1.0.

You should tell your host that 4.1.0 is even now an outdated version.  What could they possibly be holding onto it for, except to cause problems?

I set it to maintenance mode but I know that isn't the problem.  However, I just noticed that the Register button doesn't work.  And no option for retrieve password.  When I use my login and password, it does say Welcome Jumpydude etc. but when I click on something, I would be 'Guest' again.  I guess it's not the PHP version then since I had 1.50 running fine on PHP 4.0.6.  :)

What you can do is change $_COOKIE to $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS and login should work.  Be warned that in both 1.5.0 and 1.5.1 you may experience other problems and that 1.5.1 has patched other security holes in 1.5.0.
