Custom user groups

am I missing something, I am looking to switch to Yabb, i am another very large database.... anyway the way my system is set up I need custom user groups, that allow me to set up forum permissions based on the group they are in.
 Is this not possible? or am I just blind and able to find it?
 this probably the one feature I cannot live without.

If you go to manage categories, you can set what membergroups can see what boards.

Further, if you go to Edit membergroups under Member Controls there's a box to set up custom groups.
