You must use the FULL path.  Normally, it will already be in the box when you get to it.

If you don't know the path, you can either:

a. Ask your webhost.
b. Find out with PHP.
On linux:
<?php print `pwd`; ?>On windows:
<?php print `cd`; ?>
This should be similar to what YaBB SE's installer uses to default the box....

Copy it into notepad, and then click File->Save As...

Type "testing.php" (WITH the quotes, yes) into the save box, and click ok.

Now upload the file to your server, in the same directory as yabbse.

When you are done with that, go to the script with your browser.  (ie. http://yourbrowser.com/yourfolder/testing.php)

And see what it says.
