That is what I'm saying! :)

I'd think there'll be a small, but significant, number of potential users who share my views (try anyone associated with the W3C or Web Standards Project for starters?), and I'd expect them to gravitate to YaBB SE when they discover what you've told me. The fact that it's also the smartest and most functional board out there is just a massive bonus... ;)

BTW, I've been investigating alternative web hosts and I'm planning to switch ASAP!

Just installed YaBB SE 1.0.0 to a temporary sub-domain at my new host, and set the W3C validator on it...

Default template produced four errors for the index page and two for the others:

  • Omitted end tag for font at line 78, column 50 (index page only)
  • Start tag error at line 78, column 22 (index page only)
  • Unknown entity "l" at line 160, column 50
  • Unknown entity "v" at line 160, column 50
So how does Tim's default template differ from mine? I haven't touched anything (yet!). ???

PS Bright idea! Downloaded Tim's valid versions for a look, but an answer from someone (Tim?) in the know would still be much appreciated. So I only downloaded YaBB SE tonight, and I'm a little surprised to come up against this one!

only thing I can come up with is that someone altered the HTML, again, and didn't take the trouble to check...

Here are the consistent problem lines (quoted from the W3C validator):

QuoteBelow are the results of attempting to parse this document with an SGML parser.

Line 244, column 50:
  ... http://www.yabb.info/index.php?affiliate=Flypaper&l=http://www.petesta ...
                                                        ^Error: unknown entity "l"

Line 244, column 50:
  ... iliate=Flypaper&l=http://www.petestack.com/yabbse&v=YaBB SE 1.0.0" tar ...
                                                        ^Error: unknown entity "v"

Unfortunately they're from somewhere in <yabb main> and not the obvious html template, which makes them much harder to deal with. Can the development team please comment on "l" and "v" and suggest a possible solution? (The line numbers quoted above obviously vary from page to page, but the problem is always the same.)

I'm not sure why those would come up, not sure why it is rejected. They are variables being passed with that URL.

So we've got two variables in the link to yabb.info from <yabb copyright> to give you feedback on the URL and YaBB SE version of the board. But the validator sees '&', thinks unknown entities and the board doesn't validate!

Would it be permissible to stick the copyright line and target="_blank" (yabb.info) link straight into the HTML template for now in place of <yabb copyright>? It'd look exactly the same and still link back here but you'd lose the feedback from the link. When the problem's solved the <yabb copyright> with variables could be restored...

Yes or no?

Or do variables in URLs still work if you use &?

Perhaps I should just try installing 1.1.0 anyway? Or can I get a copy of the <yabb copyright> bit separately? BTW, did you get my email, Jeff? (It was too long for a YaBB instant message!) Perhaps there's just a chance that 1.1.0 might cure my other existing problems?

If you sent it to [email protected] that domain has been down all day, there are problems at the host... I will email you what you need to change in your template.html or send me your english.lng file to [email protected]
