From the info presented on the download page (http://www.yabb.info/download.php):

QuoteTo install and run YaBB SE successfully you server needs to meet or exceed these requirements
  • PHP 4 or better
  • mySQL 3.22 or better
  • 5Mb of webspace for a medium size board (Including database and 1.3Mb of files)

From Alex Rolko's 'Quick & Easy Installation Intructions for 1.0.0' (http://www.yabb.info/community/index.php?board=135;action=display;threadid=3792):

QuoteFor the least amount of complications, these are the recommended versions of PHP and mySQL to use. (Newer versions are always better of course)
----------------------------
PHP 4.0.5  -  Unix Platforms
PHP 4.1.x  -  Win32 Platforms
mySQL 3.22.x  -  Unix Platforms
mySQL 3.23.x  -  Win32 Platforms

As far as I can see (having searched and searched!), the recommendation for PHP 4.0.5 comes solely from Alex's instructions, but surely it should be included on the download page if it's that important?

The reason I ask is that I'm looking at an otherwise perfect host who's offering PHP 4.0.4. Alex's instructions seem to imply that it might be possible to use this if I'm prepared to deal with some 'complications', but I can't for the life of me find out what these are! I'd be very grateful if someone on the development team could answer this question, but I'm posting it to 'Feedback' rather than anywhere else to make a friendly point that the info on the download page could be clarified.

Thanks
P

I know it doesn't run on PHP 4.0.0 and I'm sure it does run on 4.0.5 I don't know if that's the first version it runs on to be honest. 4.0.4 *might*.

Well sorry i asked Joseph before i put any of the *nix requirements there.

i do know as a fact that to run on a windows server 4.1.0 is required do to the crypt() function.

things are still being sorted out right Jeff, Zef? and any other Dev there is that might want to add to this topic?

[edit]Just changed it to 4.0.4[/edit]

Windows does require 4.1 and exactly because of crypt().  It has worked on 4.0.4 setups...

HAR HAR! well it all depends if a windows hosts recompiled an earlier version with crypt() or not.. but 'out of the box' any version under 4.1.0 doesnt support crypt()

Thanks guys...

It's only Unix hosting I've been considering, so it sounds like I can go ahead with this one! :)

But I'd still like to see the more detailed version information copied to the download page.
