Login Problem with 1.55

YaBB SE Version: 1.5.5
PHP Version: 4.3.4
MySQL Version: 4.0.x
Server Platform: Unix, Linux, or BSD

Problem Description:
Hi,

I have apparently caught the awd bore - I can't keep logged in.

For several days, as long as I was logged in as admin only and setting everything up, I had absolutely no problem. I logged in and I stayed logged in.

Since today, when I opened a test user account, I get logged out the moment I click on any link. Meaning, I am also entirely unable to reach the admin center.

After reading thru literally everything I found on the topic I checked

PHP version - which is okay

MySQL- also okay

I changed manually via FSP the cookiename from the Yabbse155 to another one

I specifically changed browser settings to a wide open door

I deleted my cookies (several times)

...all to no effect at all.

I doubt it's browser-based, as I can log in into two other YabbSE boards without any problems.

When I check the cookies, the one from my forum looks different from the ones where I stay logged in:

Those where I stay put read like:

I'm at the end of possible solutions and rather frustrated by now *sigh*

Any good ideas?

Hi again,

I tried yet some more suggestions:

server is running on CST, so I left value at 0

I'm at Greenwich +1, so I set value to 7 manually in the db

result - still chucked out

called the forum up within frame and without (I have my own domain, so I'm not even crossing domains with the frame) - no difference at all, still chucked out

Obviously however there are YabbSEs out there working, even for me and my browser and ISP - so what the heck is the solution to this problem? *huge sigh*

And, can we have a link to test it ourselves?

Hi,

curiously my forum works again for me.

I can make a guess at the reason.

In spite of the fact that Netscape also refused to work with YabbSE, I thought maybe Microsoft has some bug patch for this problem.

And I found one for IE 6.0 which just may help a few of those having the same problem. The URL is:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=254eb128-5053-48a7-8526-bd38215c74b2&DisplayLang=en

After I installed that patch everything worked just fine for me. I was able to sign on with any name, and the forum worked inside the frame just as well as outside (mark: my frame doesn't cross domains).

Curiously, I also finally got a cookie which looked like the ones which functioned, rather than that double-thingie I got before.

Maybe a solution for at least a few having the same problem  :)

Greetings

Hi all,

more info on the login front.

I've pinpointed one further problem: Zonealarm/ZonealarmPro

Ever since I switched from ZonealarmPro to another firewall every and all login problems have ceased. Apparently this is a bug known to the Zonelabs people, as it is discussed wide and large on their bugs forum.

Even if you set Zonealarm so that normally it ought to allow the forum site to deposit cookies and allow those cookies to work, the firewall after some time "forgets" this setting. This also appears to be somewhat server-specific, meaning it happens with some servers, and not at all with others.

As by now Zonealarm is probably the single most used firewall, especially among people not well-versed in the topic, it is quite possible, that YabbSE forums where users "suddenly" can't stay logged in, it's that these users have recently upgraded to the latest Zonealarm version.

I haven't been able to reproduce that effect with most other free and every non-free firewalls.

If you can't get your users to switch firewall software, one not so great workaround is to call up the forum in question, switch off Zonealarm, refresh, then switch it on again. It usually works then for the duration of that session.

Greetings
