I am so completely lost!

YaBB SE Version: 1.5.2 to 1.5.4

Problem Description:
I am so completely lost. As I read over the different threads here, I get even more lost and frusterated. I have read all the threads regarding updating etc. but I don't get the computer jargon and it just confuses me more.

I run my own website and use the YaBB SE 1.5.4 message boards, but I am in no way a techie and don't understand the language.

Is there anyone out here who is patient and can help me using layman's terms?  I want to upgrade from 1.5.4 to 1.5.5 and have gotten part way before I get stuck. I have gone to my admin section, then to my YaBBpak center. When I browse my Yabbpaks the mod is already there (I go that far!). I applied the mod in test form and here is where things get murky.

I am told to go to my FTP and "chmmod" things to 777.  I am to find index.php, display.php etc and upload them to my server or remote site of my ftp program. Well I'm not sure where to find those files. I have several index.php files in different sections and the dates on them (on my local system) are older than the index files on the remote site. I know nothing has changed on my boards b/c when I do a detailed version check in my admin center those files still come up as outdated.

I really need someone to take me through step by step as I am getting frusterated to the point where I'm just going to do nothing and leave it.

Thanks

Jesus died for your sins... Have you thanked him?

Those files are already on your server. The "find" statements and other related things are just there so you know what's happening. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine.

Follow what instructions? And what about the chommd command? Also, what about the fact that some of the files are newer on the remote server side than on my local side in my ftp program?

I'm in the same boat a bit Natasha.

I go to the instruction pages and freak out.  It seems like a foriegn language.

I presume these boards are meant for someone with a tad more computer nous than me.

What I would love to see would be a dedicated board for beginners and instructions given in a very basic step by step layout.   That way with a bit of a kick start maybe we could learn for ourselves.

Having said that I think the support guys on this board are awesome and I can't thank them enough.   They donate their time and efforts trying to help the best they can.

Hopefully they have a life too so I'm happy to wait patiently until someone is free to offer some help.

I agree that the support people here are great and a beginners thread would be good too.

My board is working fine so I have no problem waiting for the help either.

I'm glad there are other poeple out there just as lost as I am. Now I know I'm not an idiot for not knowing what's going on or how to fix things!

That's bound to be the case when they've been uploaded to the remote site more recently than they've been downloaded to the local site! ;)

What's more, when you unzip the YaBB SE packages to your local machine, you'll be seeing the date/time the original file was created, but, when you upload them to your remote site, they'll be given the date/time of the upload...
