Forum Just stopped working - Help!

Hi
I have not really posted here much at all as i have never had a problem. Until just recently, my small forum just stopped working. I have been trying to work it out with no advancement. My webhost says that there is nothing wrong and they have not done anything but it wtill does not work. All the files are still there from what i can tell. Can i just reinstall the package again as in will it pick up the old settings or could it just be totally screwed??? Oh i cant remember the actual version i was using.
Please advise where i should start.

Don't just reinstall the package as that will overwrite your database and you'll lose all the content!

You can reupload (as opposed to reinstall) most of the source files if that helps, but you'd still need to know the correct version (and an upgrade is certainly long overdue if you're really using such an old version).

Ill go and see if i can work out exactly which version it was, i think (hope) i still have the files on my machine.
I just tried to access some of the other directories on the site, as in ****/forum/licence.txt and will display this file just wont open the index file.

Which folder should i try to overwrite?

OK Have looked around and I don't know where i got the idea it was version 1.3 from what i can tell the version is 1.5.4. If i do the upgrade to version1.5.5 would you think that may work???

By any chance did you turn on compression in the admin center before this happened?

Nope, well not that i remember. I do remember looking at the admin settings but as the forum is only VERY small i was not overly concerned about size.

Try running this query:

UPDATE yabbse_settings
SET value = '0'
WHERE variable = 'enableCompressedOutput';

Thanks for that but it doesnt seem to do much, well from what i can see anyway. As the Profile says "NOOBIE" my PHP / mysql experience is very limited.
I'll get there, looking in the DB there is either not a huge amount of data anyway or it has possibly even been corrupted.
Ill get a mate to check some stuff out for me and see how i go.
May even just nuke the whole thing an put up 1.5.5
Ill be back before i do anything drastic though.
