How to convert 1.4.1 database to 1.5.4 but keep old one?

Hi guys!

Well, sadly I've heard that Yabb SE is going to be substituted ... well, for me the time to upgrade to SMF has not come yet (although it certainly will), however after so much time using Yabb SE 1.4.1, I finally decided to update to 1.5.4.

However, for the time being, I would like to use the new version for testing purposes only, that means my members should use 1.4.1 and I use (just to see how it does) 1.5.4.

But for that I would like to copy and use the database from 1.4.1.
Is there any way I can do that?

If I use the update or upgrade regularly, the database will be converted and the 1.4.1 entries are lost.

So, my question is, is there any way to copy the old "yabbse_"-database and then convert the copy to 1.5.4?
I'm not really good at MySQL, so any help would be really appreciated.

I'm sorry, but that's crazy! Using 1.4.1 is an open invitation to get hacked now that it's known not to be safe, so keeping your production board on 1.4.1 and 'testing' 1.5.4 is all wrong...

Sure, you can copy your database, import it to a separate YaBB SE install and upgrade that, but *please* take note of my comments above!

There really is no reason to remain on 1.4.1.  Trust me, 1.5.4 performs more or less the same, just a bit better.. the only reason I could see for wanted to stay on 1.4.1.would be mods but you can easily find those for 1.5.4

Hi there!

Well, 'sadly' because there have been a lot of changes in my life lately, mostly to the better, but every change means "letting go of something".
And it seems I'll have to let go of Yabb SE as well. Maybe (I'm confident), it'll be to the better, but right now I find it just sad.

I can see your arguments for upgrading, but as Shadow's Pawn has suspected, my board is heavily modded (not exactly heavily, but it has some mods to it).
Of course I can find them for 1.5.4, but I just don't have the time to implement all of them right now, especially because it should be multi-lingual (the mods as well).

Above all, by using the copy of the database, I would want to check, whether an update works correctly or not. There's always the possibility that the database doesn't work with the upgrade due to changes made by mods, etc.
By using a copy, I could check it.

That was the main thought.

Besides, why upgrade to 1.5.4 now, when SMF could be right around the corner? I certainly hope it is .

Install a new 1.5.4 forum somewhere on your site.  Make sure you install either to a different database or with a different table prefix than your 1.4.1 board.

Go to the admin center of your 1.4.1 board, click Dump Database then select "data and structure" and save it to your hard drive..

Next, open the file in a text editor that has search and replace capability, then search for your table prefix (yabbse_ usually) and change it to the prefix you used for the 1.5.4

open up phpmyadmin and import the file into your database.. or use the restore script which is on this board somewhere to import that database.

Now go check out our 1.5.4 board.  If you do it this way, you can pretty much take your time adding the modifications that you need.. then once you are ready to open it, dump your current 1.4.1 database again and import it into the 1.5.4 board again, so that it is current again.

Because, even though we're all hoping to see SMF out ASAP, your 1.4.1 board simply isn't safe in the meantime!

Peter is right.  Honestly, I would just do the upgrade and then mod it afterward to add the features that you desperately need.  Most mods that are typically used have been updated for 1.5.4

Hi!

I was looking around a bit and found that the Supermod-version of Yabb SE features every single mod I wanted to apply (and dozens more).

It's quite fast, seems stable and I plan on updating to that version.
I'll be doing some more testing, but it certainly looks promising.

So Yabb SE 1.5.4 is coming to me after all .

You can try out Supermod if you don't feel comfortable adding the mods in yourself, but I seriously recommend just finding the mods you need and installing them yourself.  Your board will run much faster.

Also, once you install supermod, you won't be able to get much support here, since most of us have no idea what the Supermod people did to the code.  If you have any support questions with Supermod, you'll have to go here:
