A question about Avatars and a problem with news fader

Problem Description:
Ok..
First I'd like to know if I'm doing something wrong with my avatar set up. I'm a memeber of a few Yabbse sites where you upload your own avatar pic (no matter what size) and it gets resized to a nice uniform pic when posted. The problem that I'm having is that I set the size I want my avatars to be 144X144 but when I upload a pic I get an error message saying that the pick is too big. So I've tried this at a few other sites and I've never had this problem. I up load a pic of about 320X180 and when it posts it is resized to 144X144 (or what ever the size may be).  On my board if I just ignore the error message in the profile editor and go right to the board the image is set to the size that I had set up in the admin section

My other qquestion is about the news fader. Mine used to fade but now it just blinks. What happened?
