Remove notifcation upon thread lock

Just an idea I thought would be helpful - when someone locks a thread, all the notifications for that thread are removed.

As of right now, if that thread is one you want to be notified on when a new post comes in, and the thread gets locked, you are still supposed to receive notifications of new posts.  Something which won't happen, so long as the thread is locked, right?

One will need to go in and remove their notifications manully.  If it could be done automatically, that might help out some users (or at least me, since I have alot of notifications).

The only drawback to such a mod, is that should a thread get locked, and then unlocked later, all the previous notifications are gone.  But at least for threads which get locked, and stay locked, this would be helpful I think.

Besides cutting down on database size, what is the point of this.

Well, I could ask what the real point is behind some of the mods available, but that's besides the point.  Do we really need a mod that changes 'Hey' to 'Good Morning'?  No, it's just something to make the board better in some user's eyes.

Besides making the database smaller (which may be a good thing for some people, as they are limited on space), it helps prune useless items for users that don't think about pruning things themselves, or it takes care of doing so for the Admin, so he doesn't have to do it manually.

I wasn't trying to be harsh or come off with a bad tone, I really am interested in why you think this would be a useful mod.  My interest is less in making the mod and more in it seems like a reasonable request and if you can convince me it is likely it may show up in a future version.

I think it was the lateness of the hour, and the limitations of a text-based chat.  I don't normally snipe at people, as I did.

Perhaps others might be able to see more benefits to having this ability, to which they are welcome to chime in with, but here's the benefits as I see them:

  • Smaller Database Size (and increases speed (smaller databases better the larger databases))
  • It automatically takes care of something many people forget to do, or don't ever do (ie. Clean up their notifications list)
It's not a huge impacting suggestion, just one I thought would make it eaier for some Admins, espically with large traffic boards.

As a side line discussion to this thread, I think the same suggestion should be offered when a board or a category is removed.  I belive right now, when a board or category is removed by the Admin, the corresponding Notifications are still there.

What would happen when the thread was unlocked?

Well, as I said earlier, and I may be wrong about this, but when a thread gets locked, all the notifications are deleted (ie, the gone for good).  So when a thread becomes unlocked again, it's as if it were a brand new thread and people would need to request notifcations all over again.

Or maybe someone can think of a way to work around that problem....

You give the option to the user. Notify the user when the status of the thread changes (ie if it is locked or deleted). They can ask to be notified when the thread is unlocked. If they don't request this, than it is deleted.

The next version already deletes notifications when a board is removed.  I too like groundup's idea.
