Problem with auto mail function

Someone sent me a private message, and when I tried to get back to him this message showed up:

An Error Has Occurred!

2: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set()
(C:\Web\forums\Sources\Subs.php ln 885)

Does anyone know how to fix it or what is wrong?

Check your SMTP/sendmail settings in "Installed 'Mods' Settings and Options".
