Upgrade help

Okay,I'm trying to upgrade but it says "Fixing Settings.php",and theres no button or anything,i go to my board but it says:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: database_error() in BoardIndex.php on line 151

I'm a newbie to this so i may sound stupid.

Your upgrade was successful, but you didn't upload ALL of the files!

... did you un upgrade?  Try running upgrade.php again.

Have you put a ' in your user or display name?  Or have you put an impossible date of birth?  My UK posters get that message when they write dob the UK way

eg 28.12.1970
