The length of user passwords

Why is it that passwords in YaBB SE can't be longer than 8 characters, or rather that everything after the 8th character seems to be ignored?

Is that due to some sort of limitation with the crypt() function in PHP, or is there anything that can be done about it?

It's a little annoying not being able to have longer passwords than that. Apart from that, it's a great software!

Yes, it is due to crypt.  Use the MD5 mod and this problem goes away.
